Hair Loss

Experiencing hair loss can be a very distressing event for both men and women, especially if it happens at a young age. Head hair is one of our most distinguishing features and its loss can keenly affect our self esteem and even our sense of identity.

Thankfully there are medical solutions that may slow down hair loss, prevent baldness and, in some cases, even stimulate new hair growth.

Hair loss in men

For men, the most common cause of hair loss is male pattern baldness, sometimes known as androgenetic alopecia. The condition is usually inherited from parents and affects 50 percent of men over the age of 40. The condition is caused by certain male hormones speeding up the time it takes new hair to fall out. All hair falls out of our scalps eventually and is replaced by new hair – in the general population this cycle takes around 3-6 years, whereas in those with male pattern baldness, is takes only weeks or months.

Hair loss in women

While hair loss in women, known as female pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia, is less common, it does still happen. As with men, this condition is inherited and it may be caused by a hormone imbalance. Hair loss in women may also be a symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrome, so it’s important to first rule this possibility out with your doctor before starting any hair loss treatment.

Hair loss can also occur in both men and women due to:

  • Alopecia areata
  • Other auto-immune conditions
  • Radiation therapy
  • Various hormonal conditions
  • High levels of stress.

Treatments for hair loss

There are a number of medical interventions that have been shown effective in the treatment of hair loss in both men and women. Some of these treatments are oral pills that work on balancing the hormones, and others are topical treatments that work to stimulate the scalp and promote new hair growth.
